"The 1960s and 1970s were, as they say, the ‘best of times and the words of times.’ A number of very talented breeders produced some beautiful, sound and typey dogs. The intense and comfortable camaraderie of earlier times began to fade...and the large kennels with defined strains disappeared, replaced by generally smaller kennels and a very few large ones."
"If anyone knew a breed and wrote the book to prove it, it is Charlotte Clem McGowan with her recently published The Shetland Sheepdog in America. . . .the reader is drawn into the purpose of the breed and the understanding of how the breed evolved. . . . Her commentary on the AKC standard for the breed is a super strong section . . . explaining the essence of the breed to the nth degree. . . .This is a book any dog person would enjoy, with lots of attention paid to some of dogdom's most famous names such as Nate Levine. Furthermore, it is a book aimed at stimulating interest in the breed even if you have never owned a Sheltie. And if you are a Shetland Sheepdog aficionado, this book is an absolute must for your library! - Pat Trotter, Dog News
