THE AUTHORS
Robert A. Kainer, DVM, MS earned a Master of Science degree in veterinary medicine from Washington State University, where he also taught anatomy. He subsequently taught for two years in the Department of Veterinary Pathology at Oklahoma State University, and then entered private practice in Idaho Springs, Colorado. In 1961 he returned to Colorado State University where he remained as a member of the anatomy faculty for 27 years. Among the honors he received were the Top Prof Award, the Oliver Pennock Award, The Norden Award for distinguished teaching in veterinary medicine, and the Outstanding Educator of America in 1973.
Thomas O. McCracken, MS, graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in biology, followed by master's degrees in medical illustration, anatomy and physiology. He served for two years as chief medical illustrator for the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Upon returning to the U.S. he we appointed Director of Biomedical Media in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University. During his tenure at CSU he illustrated five veterinary medical textbooks and over 75 scientific papers. In 1994 he entered private enterprise and became Vice President of Visible Productions in Fort Collins, Colorado. McCracken has won numerous awards from the Association of Medical Illustrators, and in 1997 was the recipient of the Frank Netter Award for special contributions to medical education.
