Horse Anatomy

DO YOU REALLY UNDERSTAND?

Do you really understand your horse’s anatomy? As winter semester begins at schools and universities, and 4-H students begin gearing up for Horse Bowl, one of our fastest selling titles is Horse Anatomy: A Coloring Atlas by Robert A. Kainer and Thomas O. McCracken. Required reading for 4-H horse projects, it should be a required reference for any horse owner. Understanding your horse’s anatomy will help you understand his locomotion, and most importantly it will help you communicate effectively and understand your veterinarian, trainer, farrier, or other professional.

Winter is a time when horses can colic due to cold water or a change in rations. Do you know where to listen for normal or abnormal gut sounds? Knowing the in situ (normal in place position) of organs can assist in making a diagnosis or treating a diseased organ. Keeping in mind their in situ positions helps your veterinarian in locating organs by inserting a hand in the horse’s rectum.
